Constructions Torsional Buckling of Beams †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Examine about the Constructions Torsional Buckling of Beams. Answer: Presentation The torsional clasping of the pillar may will in general happen in the unstrained bar which is viewed as when there is a pressure of the spine and is totally free for the removal in the horizontal and the rotational structure. This is applied when the heap causes the sidelong relocation with the turning that could be happened. The figure above shows the best possible horizontal uprooting with the winding that has been from the bar when there is a parallel torsional kicking. the torsional impact is for the most part because of the powers with the spines. It incorporates the areas to curve about with the longitudinal hub. Here, there are impacts set to be commanded by the spine thickness with the segment that has a bigger twisting quality with a similar profundity of segment. The sidelong torsional clasping is fundamentally because of the area of the applied loads and taking care of the shape between the heap application point and shear focus (Couto et al., 2016). This influences the vulnerability to for the most part impact the clasping. The heap is applied to the segment which is powerless through the shear place and works over the impacts that incorporates the destabilization with the heaps that are applied with the impacts of BS5950-1:2000. The torsional clasping is applied with the heap that cause the s idelong dislodging with the winding. The disappointment is the point at which the heap is applied to the unconstrained steam with the ribs that have been acting under the pressure and one under the strain. The unconstrainted are for the most part because of the pressure which is free for moving along the side and has a contort also. According to the examination, the applied vertical burden for the most part brings about the pressure and the strain in the spines where the pressure by and large is for the diversion away from the first position point (Vild et al., 2017). Here, the strain will in general keep the part straight where there is a production of reestablishing the power that restrict the development predominantly it needs to stay straight. The reestablishing of powers is additionally not huge to stop the areas but rather works with the parallel segment of the pliable power that will in general decide the clasping obstruction of the bar. The torsional impact is for the most part because of the control by the spine thickness with bigger twisting quality than a similar profundity of segment. It works over applying the heap at the area which will in general decrease the vulnerability of the segment with use of the applied shear place that is for destabilizing of the heap (Barnat et al., 2017). Here, the impacts are set by utilizing the viable lengths and working over the uniform appropriation along its length. There are factors which incorporate the plan with the direction to permit the impact of various bowing second circulations. They are natural to utilize the uniform second factor. The end bolster conditions are viewed as significant for the improvement for the clasping minutes where the web spikes will in general prevent the web from redirection in the parallel structure. The end conditions are the place there are more restrictions which are set for the expanded clasping second, with the end bolster that offer less limitations. The viable length is to decide the slimness of the segment which records with the impact of end restriction on the parallel torsional clasping. The thinness of the segment has been significant for the structuring check for the horizontal torsional clasping where the variables that influence are: The bar length The solidness of the sidelong twisting of the ribs The treatment of the solidness of the torsional segment (Mandal et al., 2002). Here, the planning codes are essential to concentrate on deciding the area slimness with the versatile crucial point in time that is for the techniques set for deciding the Euler clasping of a swagger. This works over the characterized types of the pivotal pressure that will prompt the disappointment of the versatile flexural clasping that is contrasted with the crucial point in time with appropriately characterizing the second which brings about the disappointment predominantly because of the versatile sidelong torsional clasping of shaft. Here, the areas are set to characterize about the differing slim segments which will in general bomb flexibly with the exorbitant sidelong torsional clasping which is then applied for the occasion (Horacek et al, 2017). The middle of the road thin areas will in general flop in flexibly by the unnecessary types of the parallel torsions where the stocky segments achieve the plastic second with the immaterial horizontal torsional clasping. The focal point of the exploration is about the insecurity which depends on testing the genuine bars. Here, the strategies are tedious and could leave space for the mistakes. The demonstrating like the shaft is simple for the PC based procedures, where the exhibition is set to contend about the various structures under the versatile conditions with the geometry and no underlying blemishes. There are no pillars which are great and will in general act totally not quite the same as the perfect ones (Naaim et al, 2016). It is critical to concentrate on the vitality techniques which could be for dealing with the particular burden situations where the all out capability of the framework is to limit the condition of harmony and work over the states that could change in accordance with a redirected shape to the most minimal likely vitality also. The basic stacking is the place there is no vitality which is required for the distortion of the shaft into the acclimation to the avoided shape which compar es to the most minimal expected vitality. Here, there is no significant need to twist a shaft which has been avoided with the condition of balance where the potential likewise doesn't will in general change. There is a need to concentrate on the outstanding task at hand by the outer stacking at the hour of clasping which is same to the inward work done by the sectional powers. Here, the emphasis is on the components which are mind boggling, and which makes the assessment hard for the versatile crucial point in time (Qiao et al., 2003). The 3-factor equation incorporates the various factors that has a significant issue with the factors with diagnostic methodology. Here, the attention is on taking care of the no accurate shut structure articulation where the basic examples relies upon the second structures. The surmised esteem is relying on the approval with the point by point investigation of the gradual structures. The estimation of the circulated loads grabs hold of the demonstrati ons that have the shear community instead of the ribs. To take a shot at the projects, there is a need to utilize the building up of limited component model which could be a piece of the sidelong limit conditions with the genuine shaft associations that are appropriately displayed and assessed (Valarinho et al., 2016). Here, the various norms are set for the crucial point in time with the 3 factor guidelines to center over the continuation and work over the structuring systems which are set in regards to the horizontal torsional clasping. The structures are set with the size of mistakes which have been presented by the clasping bends. Instances of developments with the torsional clasping of shafts A portion of the models which are identified with the clasping of the pillars is represented the development where there is development of the steel-solid composite structures, with the steam shafts that are intended for the full second limit dependent on the ground surface which additionally give the horizontal limitations to the bars. The erection phase of the structure with the bars that doesn't get he horizontal help from the floors have the solid solidifying. The stages are commonly inclined to the horizontal clasping where the moved segments are set constantly with the decreased lingering pressure. Here, the impacts of deviation with the case of New IS 800 considers any of the destabilizing impacts with the top spine stacking set utilizing the notional viable length range (Plaut et al., 2017). The significant impact is for the most part on the pillars which are stacked with the equivalent and the far edge minutes where the stacking conditions is respected to be serious with the proportional uniform minutes (Yang et al., 2016). The fundamental structuring methods are set with the versatile crucial point in time. It has been seen that the sidelong torsional clasping is set with the picking focuses with unbraced length that is set to deal with the top ribs which should be along the side hardened. With this, the attention is on the limited component investigation to decide the powers which are significant for the level support to keep up the brace solidness. Here, the significant troubles are accounted for and should be given with the length that includes the crane to life one of the supports. The task is outfitted towards the goal of the venture for deciding the power with pressure spine of the support to forestall any sort of the parallel torsional clasping. This data is then utilized for the basic stacking that demonstrations at the various statures regarding the help on the cantilever bars. The top, and the base rib loadings are significant for the help and to work over the tightening and kaleidoscopic methodology also. Here, the tightening is about the help the arrangement of bar with the expanded profundity at the mid range (Valarinho et al., 2016). The limited component detailing is to decide the kaleidoscopic methodology where the advancement is through breaking down the Lateral Torsional Buckling Analysis Program which is to decide the solidness and the precision of the program. This is to deal with the three instances of the spine thickness, width and the shape in the web. End According to the investigation, there are reasons and the articulations which could prompt the examination and work over the computation of the old component definition. This is mostly utilized for the limit conditions and to work over the legitimacy and dependability of results. The reference esteems are identified with the approval areas for the shaft lengths and to deal with the parametric investigation also. The outcomes are when there are no sidelong

My Philosophy Of Education Patterns - 889 Words

My philosophy of education patterns the philosophy of Martin Buber. Buber believed that children learn as he or she encounters the world or the time at which they are ready to face true reality. I believe that all children are capable of learning; however, every child possesses a different level of learning potential. During my time as a math coach, I have learned that children learn best from what they see, hear, or feel. The role of a teacher in today’s classroom requires the teacher to be a facilitator and let students create and control the atmosphere of the learning community. I believe that students learn best when manipulatives are used. Manipulative help students connect visually with what they are learning. It can also provide a kinesthetic attribute to learning. Schools should encourage a more student-led learning community. Parents should also become more proactive in their child’s education. Students are more susceptible to succeeding if their suppor t system is effective. The type of behavior that is required in a school setting should be reciprocated in the home setting. Most of the discontent in classrooms stem from inconsistencies in the home. Students are expected to act one way in school, but required to act in another way at home. Knowing that there was no golden age of family life, I believed, would enable people to deal more effectively with the problems facing todays families than if they continued to romanticize the good old days " (Coontz, X ). According to the author, there is no perfect definition of good parenting as time an again it has been seen in history that what is considered good for a certain age or time, is completely reversed or negated in another. Further, the term good parenting is also relative to the class, caste and racial or ethnic background of an individual. For instance, the Sioux Indians of America had the tradition of males keeping long hair, and the cutting of these locks was a sign of mourning and was accepted, only in cases of death or any other tragedy, which befell a member of the family or tribe. But the Colonialists, per force cut the hair of these children, and forced their, alien customs and tra ditions, including proselytising them to the Christian faith, in the name of civilization. And the father apart from his traditional role, also was and to the present day is, supposed to share the burden of the mundane household chores, as well. Emphasising the point that good parenting is a relative term. This is, especially seen in the transformation that took place in the society with a change in the traditional gender roles. Divorced mothers or single mothers is another variation of family life, and much more of a reality today than just a bane in the past. Now how would we possibly define " parental omni-potence ": In simple terms, it is well nigh impossible for both parents to maintain a constant vigil on their children. Why

In High School, McCandless would start to show some of his radical ideas about how he could help fix society. McCandless’s high school buddies explained that â€Å"’ Chris didn’t like going through channels, working within the system. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ (113) Instead, McCandless would often talk about leaving school to go South Africa to help end the apartheid. McCandless near insecurity of gifts, and his longing for a peaceful and moral world caused him to want to search for another life. After burning his wallet, giving all his remaining money to charity, and leaving his beloved car behind, McCandless abandoned his family and hitchhiked his way west as far as possible. These actions and ideas that McCandless developed while studying in college were only a blueprint for his tragic flaw, which would further establish itself while traveling alone in the West. While on the road and meeting people all over the country it becomes apparent that McCandless tragic flaw is in part to do with his love for simplistic beauty but also because of his fear of forming long-term relationships. Since leaving his old life, McCandless took the role of a vagabond, which he greatly enjoyed. One of the people he met on his adventure was an older man named Ron Franz. As time passed, they grew closer and closer to each other mainly because of their conflicting views on life. McCandless continuously urged Franz to explore the world and stop â€Å"sitting on your bum† (50). Franz however strongly urged McCandless to settle down and to tell his family that he is all right. Krakauer writes that after McCandless left Franz to continue onto his Alaskan adventure: McCandless was thrilled to be on his way north, and he was relieved as well—relieved that he had again evaded the impending threat of human intimacy, of friendship, and all the messy emotional baggage that comes with it. He had fled the claustrophobic confines of his family. He’d successfully kept Jan Burres and Wayne Westerberg at arm’s length, flitting out of their lives before anything was expected of him. And now he’d slipped painlessly out of Ron Franz’s life as well. (55) This passage highlights McCandless problems with intimacy and familiarity, which would eventually cripple him in the wild, and lead to his fatal catharsis. At least in part, it is clear that McCandless goes alone into the Alaskan Bush to ignore the responsibilities that humans face while in any close relationship. Moreover, McCandless significantly hurts his family by following his dream and goal of forgetting the corrupt and rotten society that he had experienced. The true paradox of McCandless’s story is his selfishness verses his uncontrollable sense of injustice in the world that in part caused him to want to retire from his old life. Though he often fantasized of fighting in South Africa to end the apartheid, and dreamed of ending hunger, McCandless was ignorant about what his parents and loved ones must have felt when he left. McCandless’s father Walt asks, â€Å"How a kids with so much compassion could cause his parents so much pain? † (104). This question is indicative of McCandless’s tragic flaw, his need to go into the wild. McCandless aspired for independence, and in a truly patriotic way he declared the â€Å"ultimate freedom,† the â€Å"voyager whose home is the road†¦the climatic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual revolution†¦No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild. (163) McCandless’s final adventure was nearing, his confidence and jubilation rose, as his plans had all been successful to this point. McCandless’s clear flaws, and mixed character traits are the initial signs of a tragic hero in literature; unfortunately, McCandless would live out this literary concept himself. McCandless’s demise in the Alaskan Bush is due to a dramatic turn of events, which are consequently caused by his tragic flaw. McCandless started out strong, he found an abandoned bus that became his new home and he successfully hunted animals, while also able to find nearby plants that were edible. Nevertheless, his luck changed when after deciding he would bring his â€Å"great adventure† (163) to a close he realized that the overflowing river that separated him from the trail also separated him from the outside world. McCandless found it harder to find game, which caused him to rely on plants. There is no conclusive evidence as to what ultimately caused McCandless to starve to death, however he wrote in his journal a week before his death; â€Å"Extremely weak, fault of pot. Seed. Much trouble just to stand up. Starving. Great Jeopardy† (189). McCandless knew that he was most likely to die and his dream had unexpectedly backfired. The group that discovered McCandless’s body first came across a note that McCandless had written and posted on the bus in the same week before he died. The beginning of the note read; â€Å"S. O. S I need your help. I am injured, near death and too weak to hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke† (12). Aristotle writes that a tragic hero experiences â€Å"a disastrous change of fortune, or reversal, catapults him from the heights of happiness to the depths of misery. This fall usually comes as a consequence of a tragic flaw in the hero’s character and/or an error of judgment. It is clear that McCandless’s tragic flaw inspired him to hitchhike and live in the Alaskan wilderness. Moreover, as evidenced by his â€Å"declaration of independence† (163) McCandless was at the â€Å"height of happiness† only to fall into the â€Å"depths of misery. † The final recognition that McCandless experiences complete his journey that is char acterized as a tragic hero. When McCandless is starving, sick, and near death, he finally stumbles upon the truth that he had been running from. Next to McCandless body, a note read; â€Å" Happiness only real when shared† (1189). Though it is impossible to know for sure how McCandless would have changed his life if he were rescued, it is important to recognize that he did not completely, if at all- regret going into the wild. On the back of a poem entitled â€Å"Wise Men in Their Bad Hours† by Robinson Jeffers, McCandless said goodbye: â€Å"I have had a happy life and Thank the Lord. Goodbye and may God bless all! † (199) In addition, McCandless took a picture of himself â€Å"standing near the bus under the high Alaska sky, one hand holding his final note toward the camera lens, the other raised in a brave, beatific farewell. (199) The fact that McCandless was smiling and took the time to write that he had a happy life proves the final piece of any tragic hero. McCandless is certainty not depressed, and his moment of catharsis symbolizes the truth about happiness that McCandless had been searching for. McCandless depicts a real life American tragic hero, instigated by dream, and followed by a desire to live life for oneself. McCandless primary tragic flaw being his unwillingness to form long-term relations brought him both to the happiest moment of his life, but also to his demise. McCandless never had a problem with people, but rather with the status quo of society, the idea that a man or a woman has to live inside of a coordinate plane. McCandless left home and went on his adventure simply for his own well being, he achieved both what he wanted to accomplish while learning a valuable lesson along the way. He learned that happiness must be shared, and while everyone has his or her flaws, it is important to let these go. Christopher McCandless should teach people the importance of following your dreams, and the importance of enjoying the natural serenity of life.

Can I Get an Alternate SAT Test Date

Can I Get an Alternate SAT Test Date SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Can’t make the test date you signed up for on the SAT? You're in luck! It’s possible to arrange an alternate test date for the following week, although it’s often easier to just switch to the next official test date. In this article you'll learn what constitutes an alternate test date, the criteria for requesting one, and how to submit your request. What Is an Alternate Test Date? Alternate SAT testing takes place during the week following any offical Saturday SAT test date. It's a recourse for students who don't want to switch their registration to the next official test date and have an unexpected conflict during the Saturday test session. In order to have a chance at snagging an alternate date, your request must be submitted at least ten business days in advance of the original test date. You may have to switch your test center location depending on the availability of proctors and how many other students are taking the test on the alternate date. You'll be notified of any changes by the College Board. What Arethe Criteria for Requesting an Alternate Test Date? There are pretty strict guidelines governing the process for requesting an alternate test date. This is necessary to prevent the testing process from turning into a free-for-all because no one wants to get up early on a Saturday morning. Here are the three criteria for submitting a request: 1. You Have an Unexpected and School-Sanctioned Conflict This includes things like finals for academic or athletic competitions. A common situation is that students have advanced through a competition and couldn’t have originally predicted that they would be competing on the date of the test. This doesn’t include conflicts like regularly scheduled school affiliated club meetings, athletic events, or prom.It also doesn’t include anything related to outside of school activities like recreational sports or those private music lessons you take to nurture your secret passion for jazz flute. 2. You Were Registered for the Test Date in Question Before You Knew about the Conflict This one should be a no-brainer.Hopefully, you checked your calendar before you registered and the conflict came up later! 3. You Requested No More than One Alternate Test Date This Year Prior to Your Current Request You only get two alternate test date requests per year. It's pretty unlikely that this issue would arise, but you should be aware just in case. If you really want to have fun with it, bring a snack that includes dates to your alternate test date. How Do I Request an Alternate Test Date? You, the student, cannot directly request an alternate test date. These requests must be made through a school official.Talk to your guidance counselor about your need for an alternate date. If everything checks out based on the criteria above, he or she can submit a request to the College Board.Keep in mind that your alternate date must fall within a week of the original test date, and your request must be submitted at least 10 business days before the original test date.Notify your guidance counselor of the conflict as soon as possible! You can also switch to a different official test date if taking the test later isn’t a problem for you. This doesn’t require going through a school official. Make the switch through your online College Board account or by calling Customer Service. The fee for switching to a different official test date is $28. A Word of Warning If you test on an alternate date, you may have delayed access to the online version of your essay. You also won’t be able to order the Question-and-Answer Service, although you will still be able to order the less in-depth Student Answer Service. The Question-and-Answer Service gives you full access to your test booklet along with a listing of all the question types and difficulty levels. It also gives you a breakdown of your answers and information about the scoring process for each question. This can be a very helpful tool for future studying. If you'd like to order it, stick with official test dates in May, October, or January. Other Alternate Testing Requests Here are some other potential reasons you might request alternate test dates and how the process works for each of them. Note that unlike regular requests for an alternate date, requests for Sunday testing and special location testing must be submitted with your original test registration! Sunday Testing If you can’t test on Saturday for religious reasons, you can put in a request to take the SAT on Sunday instead. This requires an official clergy letter that explains the religious observance that prevents Saturday testing. You must mail the letter on official letterhead from your religious institution along with your SAT registration no later than the registration deadline. For Sunday testing requests, use the code 01000 on your paper registration. Testing in a More Convenient Location You can request to test closer to where you live if the closest available testing center is more than 75 miles away. The College Board will set up a testing center that is more convenient for you and notify you of the new location.Again, you must mail in your registration for this request along with a letter of explanation of your circumstances. For a closer testing location request, use the code 02000 on your paper registration. Is this your house? Submit a closer location testing request, and the College Board will set up a test center near you. Also you should probably move before the ghosts start to get too rowdy. The Bottom Line Most reasons for requesting an alternate date are probably not going to pass the strict criteria outlined by the College Board. Your guidance counselor will help you figure out whether it's worth submitting a request for an alternate date. If it doesn't work out, you always have the option of switching to the next official test date. Make sure that when you sign up for the SAT you think ahead to what’s going on that weekend and mark it on your calendar so you can avoid putting yourself in this situation! What's Next? Article Review - Essay Example The authors asserted that there is a need for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to focus on aligning knowledge on information technology (IT) and internet laws to avoid legal sanctions and violations associated with non-compliance of standards in operating their businesses. Several recommendations were explicitly disclosed by the authors to run SMEs legally and ethically. compliance, intellectual property, electronic marketing, information security, and data protection (Iqbal, Khan, & Naseer, 2013). The authors provided readers with the relevant regulations that would ensure mitigation of the identified legal risks in each of the identified category. For instance, for businesses that require enforcements of patents, the â€Å"Patents Act 2004 protects the inventions through legal protection† (Iqbal, Khan, & Naseer, 2013, p. 5). Likewise, the Intellectual Property Office was noted to have the jurisdiction and governance for ensuring adherence to patent laws. Concurrently, the Data Protection Act of 1998 was revealed to be responsible for protecting personal information of the public (Iqbal, Khan, & Naseer, 2013). The legal issues which were identified and discussed affected electronic businesses in terms of the exposure to risks that could jeopardize the normal operations of the entities. Aside from being potentially preponderant to legal or ethical complaints from customers and other stakeholders, unfamiliarity with legal laws, as well as ethical standards would expose the SMEs in different levels and degrees of risks. As emphasized, â€Å"the unauthorized alteration of contents of communication, malicious communication on behalf of an organization etc. are some of the risks attached to information security and cause reputation damage, financial losses, loss of trust and loss of information to the company† (Iqbal, Khan, & Naseer, 2013, p. 7). As such, the recommendations proposed by the authors assist in mitigating these

Assignment Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Assignment - Coursework Example This has resulted in downgrading of economies as well as reduction in growth forecasts for various countries around the world by leading agencies like S&P, IMF etc (The Guardian, 2011). The fluctuation in the economy as well as rise in deficits has led to various kinds of spending cuts on the parts of the government of various countries around the globe. The fierce economic swinging in the recent times has also produced severe fluctuations of indexes of industrial productions in various established economies like the US for a prolonged period. Many of the industries belonging to various sectors like hospitality, agriculture, retail etc. have been severely affected. (THE WESTERN UNION COMPANY, p.19) This fluctuation in industrial production has in turn resulted in significant cost cutting by the companies around the world, which in turn affected the job market and thereby hampering consumer spending (AccaGlobal, p.7). The operations of Western Union highly include the transfer of fina nces on the part of the consumers as well as business houses to various parts of the world. The gloomy scenario emerging out of the inability to resolve the ongoing Euro crisis by the national political parties has led to prolonged variations in job opportunities there by immensely hampering the spending on the part of the consumers. (National Bureau of Economic Research, P.9) The peer reviewed article highlights the problems that arose in the auto industry in the US during the 2008-2011 periods as a culmination of low sales, high structural costs as well as debts (Klier and Rubenstein, p.1-21). The paper also discusses the related governmental procedures that happened during that period ranging from the unavailability of a consensual decision to provide support to the carmakers to the issuance of financial assistance for a short span by the outgoing political party. The paper rightfully discusses

The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing Essay Example for Free

The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing Essay In the introduction to â€Å"They Say/ I Say†: the Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein provide templates designed to help with academic thinking and writing. Specifically, Graff and Birkenstein argue that the types of writing templates they offer realistically help set up a conversation and argument. As the authors themselves put it, â€Å"In our view, then, the best academic writing has one underlying feature: it is deeply engaged in some way with other peoples views. † Although some people believe to sound intelligent you must state your claim and provide facts on why your claim is true, Graff and Birkenstein insist that to â€Å"play it safe and avoid controversy in your writing† is lifeless. In sum, then, their view is that if you are going to write, write to stir controversy and cause discussion, along with giving the basics to master good academic writing. I agree, in my view, the types of templates that the authors recommend invite people to start conversation and learn different points of views as well as teaching others, and the templates themselves gives people the opportunity to hone the skills of academic writing. For instance, when using the template for writing they get us to include the opposition’s possible belief or rebuttal to our own points, which in return force us as the writer to look beyond just our thoughts and look through other’s eyes. Some might object, of course, on the grounds that our creativity when using templates would be greatly diminished. Yet I would argue that the templates simply give us a cornerstone to start with, and we can build our paper off of it as creative as we want. Overall, then, I believe the templates simply help us practice to become better writers much like practicing sports when you first begin playing, to become the best we can be.

Mother teresa Essay -- essays research papers

â€Å"Life is beauty, admire it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is wealth, keep it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it!† were the lines of Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu who is now known as the famous Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa born to an Albanian family on August 26th, 1910 in a city called Skopje, Serbia. As a child, Agnes lived in a quite favorable house and was educated in local schools. Her father was a building contractor while her mother was a homemaker. At the age of nine Agnes father died leaving her mom to raise her and her two elder siblings. Mrs. Bojaxhiu embroidered clothes that got her a daily income to raise her children. Since a young age Agnes helped poor people by giving them food to eat and clothes to wear. At the age of twelve she decided that she wanted to become a nun. When she was eighteen she left her family and house knowing that she would never see them again. Studying in Ireland for a year to become a nun she took another step ahead and went to India. There she took her final vows of becoming a nun and adopted the name Sister Teresa in honor of Therese of Lisieux. She worked in a school in Calcutta, India for many years proving herself as a good teacher and principal. When she saw dead bodies on streets and everyday miseries of Calcutta she convinced herself that she should be working among the poor and desperate people of Calcutta rather than rich. Sister Teresa reques...

Extended Definition of the Word Religious Essay

When defining a word, a simple step to take is get a dictionary and it will surely help someone whose problem is grasping for the meaning of a particular word. And as one reaches for a dictionary to determine a word’s definition, observation has to be taken with regards to the word’s denotation/s (direct meaning) and connotation/s (meanings which are implied), if ever these are included. In so doing, a proper grasp of the word will be obtained. The same basic rules will be applied by this writer to clarify on the meaning of the word â€Å"religious. † From its first meaning, to how it is being used by many nowadays, to how the Bible uses the word. Dr. Lisa Rowe Fraustino, an editor and a professor at State University of New York, said that the meaning of words changes over time. If one wants to find out what is the exact meaning of a term or an expression in a culture, the person needs to observe carefully how do the speakers/writers use it (Fraustino, 1998). Generally, the word religious is taken to mean of a person who is observant of a religion; a person who devoutly follows certain spiritual teachings of a considered sacred society (http://www. brainyquote. com/words/re/religious211796. html). This kind of definition is what people commonly apply to monks, priests, an ordained minister, and to those who are simply observants of certain religions. In recent years though, the word is acquiring an extended meaning. It can now be applied to just anything that characterizes rigidity. A doctor may advice a patient, who is borderline diabetic to avoid foods high in sugar content, and may tell the patient finally, to follow the advice â€Å"religiously. † This means, because of the urgency of the patient’s need to cut on sugar, to follow the order rigidly. If the person in this case, before being diagnosed as having too much high blood sugar, was naturally a type who has a liking for sweets, this time – as the doctor had given his professional advice – sweet foods must be reduced to tolerable measure, if not totally avoided. This is what the doctor means when he told his patient to keep his advice in a â€Å"religious† manner. Thus, today, the uses of the word religious have extended beyond its original meaning. Although it retains certain aspects of it, like the scrupulous observance of a devout person to his/her religion, the connotations now include anything that suggests strictness, and not necessarily commitment to a spiritual order. The general understanding that is retained by many about â€Å"religious† is most likely taken from the Bible’s portrayal of it in several passages found therein. For example, in the book of Acts 17:22 in the New Testament, Apostle Paul observed the Athenians to be â€Å"very religious. † The Apostle has used the word in its broad meaning, which includes allegiance to certain beliefs which are not necessarily of the same order as that of the apostles and the Jews. As long as there is a belief in the Supreme Being or beings, spiritual realities, and rituals, religion is present and its adherents can be described as religious. And so, the Bible, when speaking of being religious, it does not immediately mean â€Å"being right in practice of piety† before God. The reason for this is not difficult to see in other portions of the Holy Writ. The author of the book of James, which is also found in the New Testament, implied in his statement that there are two kinds of religion in the eyes of God: one is â€Å"useless,† and the other is â€Å"pure and undefiled† (Jas. 1:26-27). Even though the general meaning embraces any religion and religious order, every belief and practice, and it is true that the Bible itself attests to the fact that there many religions as well as different practices that humans observed even in the early times of the history of humankind, the Bible nevertheless distinguishes between true and false religion. There is true, as well as, there is false religion. Given the fact, however, that the word religious has already taken new forms of meaning nowadays, those who use the word loosely must note the differences of usage. Let us observe what the speaker means when he/she uses the word, because now, it can mean many other things. References: 1. Fraustino, Lisa Rowe. 1998.
